Progression and planning with Charanga – online CPD training

Charanga Musical School is the most significant new Primary music resource for a decade.

Lesson planning is different for each school and relies upon a secure knowledge of progression, a key feature of the Scheme: Scope & Sequence. We’ll look at progression throughout the school year and across the age range, to show how it could be unpacked and used to support planning at all levels from the year group down to individual lessons.

Charanga offers a complete new music scheme for the new curriculum. Find out more about Charanga.

Improvise and Compose with Charanga – online CPD training

Charanga Musical School is the most significant new Primary music resource for a decade.

Improvising, often called ‘making it up as you go along’, is a fantastic way to explore music from within.

This webinar will focus on ideas to develop and improve skills, giving attention to the musical setting.  While improvisation is of the moment, a composition can be revisited and refined over time. In this session we’ll include the activities from Step 4 of the units for ages 5-11 as well as those found elsewhere, and consider ideas to hone and extend compositional skills.

Primary School Music Teachers Network

Following on from our recent online meeting, we are excited to be planning the next Essex Music Hub’s Primary Music Teachers Network event.

During these meetings, research, resources and projects are shared that can be utilized in classrooms and colleagues round the county discuss how music is made in schools.  We will also share some quick ideas that can be taken away and use the next day in your classrooms.

Our next network meeting, taking place on Thursday 22 April, will focus on singing, thinking about how we can safely sing in school and how we can use the opportunity of limitation to explore good vocal health and singing technique (which is best practised quietly!)

We will be joined by Charlotte Brosnan to introduce *Friday Afternoons’ resources and to give us a taster of the CPD session that she will be delivering in the week following the meeting.

Subsequent meetings will be planned for each half term and will cover topics related to all aspects of music in primary schools.

If you have any ideas for future sessions, would like to share an idea or have a question you would like us to address please contact sarah.goldsmith@essex.gov.uk and we look forward to seeing you virtually soon.

Developing quality singing in Primary Schools

We know that singing in school is tough at the moment and we want to help you to develop quality, quiet (therefore COVID-safer) singing.

With this in mind, we have asked *Friday Afternoons’ Ambassador, Charlotte Brosnan, to share some ways to improve the quality of singing in school.  We all want to develop our young singers’ talents and enthusiasm, but how can we do that whilst building in quality and avoiding shouting?

Charlotte will be running an online CPD session for primary school music leaders and class teachers who are interested in developing singing in their schools.

She will be using materials from Friday Afternoons, which is freely available to all primary schools.  Starting with a bank of songs written by Benjamin Britten for primary-aged voices, Friday Afternoons have developed a bank of contemporary classical and folk music for children.  There are songs in the repertoire that are easily accessible for primary-aged children and others that will challenge more competent singers.
